Ice Skating Magazine
Welcome to our Canadian issue! Our distributor tripled our newsstand order in Canada, so we thought it only fitting that we use this issue to pay tribute to the current group of Canadian skaters. On one cover we present 2003 World champions Shae-Lynn Bourne & Victor Kraatz. The perennial Canadian ice dance champions have led a roller coaster career over the years ranging from two disappointing Olympics to a thrilling victory at the 2002 Grand Prix Final. So it seemed just when two of skating’s nicest personalities saw their amateur career end on a fairy tale note when they took home their first World title in a thrilling showdown with last year’s World champions, Irina Lobacheva & Ilia Averbukh at the 2003 World Championships in Washington, D.C. With the announcement of their retirement from amateur skating, Shae-Lynn & Victor sat down with ISM to reflect on their long and illustrious career. How could we do a Canadian themed issue and not feature Jennifer Robinson, a woman who has single-handedly placed Canadian women’s figure skating back on the map with three top ten finishes in the last four years? And she’s not finished yet. Robinson has already announced her intention to remain eligible next year. Meanwhile, Canada’s adopted son, Takeshi Honda, proved that last year’s World bronze medal was no fluke when he ended his season with another third place finish at a World Championship. While we’re looking at the current group of Canadian leaders, it’s never too early to look toward the future, as ISM chats with Canadian silver medalist Joannie Rochette, bronze medalist Annie Bellemare and 2003 Canadian Jr. ladies champion Meagan Duhamel. We also catch up with pro skating sensation, Gia Guddat. We should also mention that this issue officially marks the one year anniversary of Ice Skating Magazine. A lot has happened in a single year. When we started, we were a digest size magazine available through only pro shops and subscriptions. Since that time we have expanded into a full size publication that is carried in bookstores and pro shops across the United States and Canada. Our subscriber base still continues to grow and we are extremely grateful for all the support you have extended toward our young magazine. With all these external changes comes the need for internal expansion. We’d like to welcome four new editors into our Ice Skating Magazine family. Former Go Figure editor Julie Nikolovski joins us as our new Midwest editor. Ex-6.0 Skate Magazine chief Suzanne Pyle has become our new East Coast editor. Thom Mullins editor of 32degrees has joined our team as Adult Skating editor, Last, but certainly not least, Deanna Willmarth heads our new synchronized skating section. We’re also pleased to announce the merging of Synchro Magazine and the popular Synchro Skating Scene publication headed by Holly Teets and Shannon Peterson who will now be working tightly with ISM in bringing synchro fans the top synchro coverage. You can read a full introduction to our new ISM team of editors on page 10. Finally, we are pleased that our online community has shown no sign of slowing down as it burpassed 10,000 members during the off-season. Annie Bellemare, Carolina Kostner, and Stephane Lambiel have joined our online network of official sites, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome them aboard. Log onto to SkatingInc.com to visit their new official websites and send them your best wishes for the upcoming season. They’d love to hear from you! We hope everyone is enjoying a wonderful summer!
